Al-Qastal was one of the villages in the Jerusalem district, located to the west of the city, approximately 8 kilometers away, at an elevation of 790 meters above sea level. Its built-up area was estimated at about 5 dunams out of a total land area of 1,446 dunams. Al-Qastal was centrally located among several Jerusalem-area villages, including Beit Surik, Beit Iksa, Qalunya, Ein Karim, Suba, Beit Naquba, and Ein Naquba.

In 1951, the Ma'oz Zion settlement (164133) was established on the village lands. Later, it was incorporated into the settlement of Mevaseret Yerushalayim, founded in 1956 on the lands of Qalunya (165134). Together, these formed the Jerusalem suburb known as Mevaseret Zion.
