Kiryat Motzkin Colony

Kiryat Motzkin is a settlement located in the Haifa District in the occupied region of Qastina, approximately 8 kilometers north of central Haifa. According to the Israeli Central Bureau of Statistics, the settler population in 2022 was 48,001. However, as of September 2024, the unofficial population reached approximately 55,600, reflecting significant growth not yet recorded in official statistics. This increase may be attributed to the migration of settlers from northern settlements due to the ongoing war since October 7, 2023, during which at least 100,000 settlers relocated. The settlement is named after Leo Motzkin (1867–1933), one of the organizers of the First Zionist Congress in 1897. Kiryat Motzkin was established in 1934, and by 1935 the first school was opened. By 1939, the population reached approximately 2,000, with 345 buildings constructed. The Kiryat Motzkin railway station was built by the British Mandate authorities in 1937. During World War II, Kiryat Motzkin suffered from German and Italian aerial bombings. It was granted local council status in 1940. During the 1947–1948 civil war in Mandatory Palestine, an important battle occurred near Kiryat Motzkin when the Haganah destroyed an Arab arms convoy and killed the commander of the Arab forces in the operation, contributing to the Zionist victory in the Battle of Haifa. Kiryat Motzkin has experienced significant waves of immigration throughout its history, contributing to its diverse population. Approximately 40% of the settlers are immigrants from the former Soviet Union or their descendants, which has greatly influenced the cultural landscape of the city. According to the Israeli Ministry of Interior, in 2024, the ethnic composition of the city mainly consists of Jews and other non-Arabs. The city has witnessed positive migration trends, with more people moving in than out, attributed to its reputation as a safe, quiet, and comfortable place to live. The socioeconomic status of Kiryat Motzkin’s residents ranks high within the Haifa metropolitan area, scoring 7 out of 10 (with 10 being the highest), indicating a relatively affluent community.
