Shafir is a moshav in southern occupied Palestine, located near Kiryat Malakhi. Shafir was established on August 15, 1949, by immigrants from Hungary and Czechoslovakia. It was built on land that formerly belonged to the Palestinian village of Al-Sawafir al-Sharqiyya, whose residents were displaced during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. The settlement was named after the biblical city of Shafir, which also means "good" and "beautiful." Today, Shafir consists of a mix of Czechoslovakian, Hungarian, and Persian descendants. In 2022, the population of settlers was approximately 933. Sources: Due to the scarcity of Arabic sources, Hebrew sources were used: the settlement’s official Hebrew website and the Israeli Central Bureau of Statistics.
