Bureij Refugee Camp

Bureij Refugee Camp is located approximately 9 kilometers south of Gaza City. It takes its name from Khirbet al-Bureij, an area that historically belonged to the Hanajira tribe. During the British Mandate in Palestine, the Bureij area served as a military barracks for the British Army. Some of the former military buildings are still standing today and are occupied by several families.
Bureij Camp is situated south of Wadi Gaza. It is bordered by Maghazi Refugee Camp to the south, Nuseirat Refugee Camp to the west, Wadi Gaza to the north, and the Armistice Line, known as the “Green Line,” to the east. The railway line connecting Egypt with Lydda runs directly along its western side. This railway was part of the Qantara–Haifa railway route. The international paved road connecting Cairo and Gaza also passes through the area.
The camp's residents originally came from the villages of Al-Majdal, Al-Sudud, and Jaffa. Their population was estimated at approximately 16,189 in 1985 and around 22,466 as of June 30, 1992. According to estimates by the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics, the camp had approximately 32,743 refugees in mid-2023.
