Rishon LeZion is a settlement located south of the "Tel Aviv" settlement, south of the occupied Jaffa area, on the lands of the depopulated Arab village of Ayn Qara. It covers an area of 59 square kilometers. The settlement was founded on 31 July 1882 by a group of "Hovevei Zion" (Lovers of Zion) from Kharkiv, Ukraine. It was developed with funding from Baron Rothschild, who established wine presses there for producing wine and encouraged the cultivation of various grape varieties. It is today one of the settlements of the Gush Dan area, and ranks fourth in population among Zionist settlements, with a population of about 249,860 people in 2017.
